How Deep Should Paver Base Be?

There is no single correct paver base depth. The right depth depends on what the surface carries, what is underneath it, and the climate. This guide walks through the factors so you can pick a sensible depth for your project.

What the base does

The aggregate base spreads load, drains water, and provides a stable, level setting bed for the pavers. Too thin and the pavers settle and shift under traffic or frost; too thick and you spend more on excavation, material, and hauling than the job needs. The goal is enough depth to stay stable without overbuilding.

Match depth to the load

Foot traffic and light patio use put modest stress on the base. A 4 to 6 inch compacted base is common for patios and garden paths. Driveways that carry passenger vehicles usually need 6 to 12 inches, with heavier use or poor soil pushing toward the higher end. A walkway used only by people rarely needs as much base as a parking strip.

Account for soil and drainage

Stable, well-drained native soil needs less base than soft clay or wet ground. On soft or expansive soils, a thicker base — sometimes with a geotextile separator — keeps the aggregate from mixing into the subgrade and losing strength. If water pools on the site, improving drainage or adding base depth helps the surface survive freeze-thaw cycles.

Account for frost

In cold climates, frost heave can lift a thin base and crack the surface. The conventional approach is to dig below the local frost line for the base, or at least deep enough that frost does not reach the subgrade beneath it. Check the frost depth for your area and local code requirements before settling on a depth.

Install in lifts, not one pour

Whatever depth you choose, compact the base in lifts of roughly 2 to 4 inches. A single deep loose layer rarely compacts evenly, leaving soft spots that settle later. Worked example

A backyard patio on reasonably firm soil in a mild climate: a 4-inch compacted base is a common starting point. The same patio on soft clay in a frost-prone region might use 6 to 8 inches over a geotextile, dug to keep frost off the subgrade. A driveway on the same soft soil would push to 10 to 12 inches.
